The next day at work Dominic asks his boss if he can schedule a week’s vacation. He was serious about getting a dog, and he read that it’s easier to transition a dog into a home if the new owner spends time helping the dog acclimate.

Dominic’s periodically checked the humane society’s web site for the past year, looking at the dogs that are up for adoption. More than once he’s found a dog he wants to adopt, but each time talked himself out of the responsibility and the hassle of pet ownership. But this time he feels like it’s something he wants, needs to do.
